Abstract

QUISPE, Cristina; ASTUDILLO, Luis; VILLASENOR, Jorge  and  DELGADILLO, Álvaro. Ozonation of the antibiotic Trimethoprim: Toxicity evolution during the degradation reactions. Rev. Soc. Quím. Perú [online]. 2010, vol.76, n.2, pp.149-155. ISSN 1810-634X.

Herein we report the degradation of the pharmaceutical compound trimethoprim (TMP) in water using ozonation. This process was described by a pseudo first order reaction kinetics and the main degradation products were identified using Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and HPLC. Based in the detected compounds, a degradation pathway was proposed. The evolution of the toxicity along with the ozonation reaction was followed measuring acute toxicity with Daphnia magna. An increase in the toxicity of the solutions was observed after 60 minutes of reaction time, probably due to the generation of the toxic degradation products.

Keywords : ozonation; pharmaceuticals compounds; degradation; toxicity.
