Abstract

PICCOLO, Gustavo Martins. Portraits of exclusion: Political underrepresentation of people with disabilities in Brazil. Elecciones [online]. 2023, vol.22, n.25, pp.281-314.  Epub June 30, 2023. ISSN 1994-5272.  http://dx.doi.org/10.53557/elecciones.2023.v22n25.09.

This article, built through a process of literary review associated with the qualitative analysis of electoral data made available by the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (Brazilian Superior Electoral Court), aims to analyze how people with disabilities become elected officials in the Brazilian scenario. It highlights the discrepancy between the high number of people with disabilities in Brazil and their low presence in elected positions, due to a set of inaccessible barriers that make it difficult for them to participate equally in collective life. Finally, it presents the important advances achieved because of people with disabilities voted as elected officials-especially in the Legislative Branch. These elected officials, even in small numbers, catalyzed the appearance of fundamental proposals that aimed to make our spaces and relationships more accessible, therefore democratic and fair.

Keywords : People with disability; inclusion; public policy; general elections; accessibility.
