Abstract

AVILA-EGGLETON, Marcela. Tamaulipas 2023: Between polarization and abstentionism. Elecciones [online]. 2023, vol.22, n.25, pp.315-330.  Epub June 30, 2023. ISSN 1994-5272.  http://dx.doi.org/10.53557/elecciones.2023.v22n25.10.

This article analyzes the extraordinary election in Tamaulipas (Proceso Electoral Federal Extraordinario Tamaulipas 2023 [Pefet 2023], in Spanish), held on February 19, 2023. This election was called due to a Senate seat left vacant by the sudden death of its holder, Senator Faustino López, on October 8, 2022. The article highlights that this electoral replacement is atypical, as extraordinary elections are usually the result of challenges or judicial resolutions, not due to the definitive absence of the elected representative and their alternate. This work focuses on explaining the peculiarities of this electoral process while considering the political context of Mexico, its party structure dynamics, and their consequences on electoral behavior.

Keywords : Extraordinary election; electoral behavior; Mexico.
