Resumen

BANEGAS CEDILLO, Mónica. Title Violence against women, gender parity, and monitoring in elections: A comprehensive study from Observatorio Nacional de la Participación Política de la Mujer in the 2023 Ecuadorian snap presidential and legislative elections. Elecciones [online]. 2023, vol.22, n.26, pp.91-120.  Epub 14-Dic-2023. ISSN 1994-5272.  http://dx.doi.org/10.53557/elecciones.2023.v22n26.03.

Persistent violence against women in politics, a challenge affecting millions of women across the globe, has gained prominence in Latin America in recent years. In the fight for equality and the recognition of rights, women have faced a historic battle that often involves sacrifices and even death. This gender-based violence manifests itself at every level in society, including the political arena, historically dominated by a male perspective.

The 2008 Ecuadorian Constitution marked a milestone by setting the country as a State of rights and justice, focused on the defense of women’s rights. In this context, gender parity emerged as a crucial principle: not just a formality, but an optimization mandate. This work highlights how analyzing parity and gender-based political violence is essential for an inclusive and equitable democracy.

This article delves into an exhaustive conceptual analysis of gender-based political violence and the simultaneous search for parity, from the unique perspective of the Observatorio Nacional de la Participación Política de la Mujer (National Observatory for the Political Participation of Women). Then, it explores the problem of gender political violence in the Ecuadorian context, placing a specific focus on snap elections and its connection with the most recent legislative reforms in terms of gender equality and parity.

Palabras clave : Gender-based political violence; gender equality; gender discrimination; gender parity; snap elections; legislative advances.
