Abstract

TORRES OYANEDEL, Rocío  and  SUAREZ-CAO, Julieta. Title Underrepresentation of women mayors in Chile: limitations and challenges of women’s political representation. Elecciones [online]. 2023, vol.22, n.26, pp.205-230.  Epub Dec 14, 2023. ISSN 1994-5272.  http://dx.doi.org/10.53557/elecciones.2023.v22n26.06.

This investigation addresses the underrepresentation of women in executive positions within local governments in Chile by considering multiple sources such as academic articles, reports, and personal communications. This pool of information provides a comprehensive analysis of the factors that influence women’s participation in politics at a community level. We identify the barriers that hinder women’s political advancement, such as caregiving responsibilities, unpaid work, and a lack of commitment from political parties to promote gender equality and women’s representation. Finally, we emphasize the need for cultural and institutional changes to promote gender equality and create a more inclusive political environment.

Keywords : Local governments; underrepresentation of women; female mayors; political parties.
