Abstract

LOPEZ, Magdalena. 2023 General Elections in Paraguay: open list and concentration of power. Elecciones [online]. 2023, vol.22, n.26, pp.261-284.  Epub Dec 14, 2023. ISSN 1994-5272.  http://dx.doi.org/10.53557/elecciones.2023.v22n26.08.

This article describes and analyzes the actors, campaign, and results of the Paraguayan general elections, held on April 30, 2023. The analysis confirms the validity of the Paraguayan party system. Furthermore, the success of the Partido Colorado contradicts the regional trend of punishing the ruling parties. This result may have been different with a broader coalition capable to combine votes, as in the 2008 elections. Such coalition was hard to form, partly due to the anti-system characteristics of candidate Paraguayo Cubas. This article analyzes information on other relevant topics, such as the greater incidence and representation of women in elected positions, despite recent electoral reforms such as the open list.

Keywords : Paraguay; general elections; party system; Partido Colorado; electoral reforms.
