Abstract

GUADARRAMA-CRUZ, Carlos  and  LOPEZ, Karla Estrada. Gubernatorial elections in Coahuila and the State of Mexico: A prelude to the Mexican presidential race. Elecciones [online]. 2023, vol.22, n.26, pp.285-306.  Epub Dec 14, 2023. ISSN 1994-5272.  http://dx.doi.org/10.53557/elecciones.2023.v22n26.09.

On June 4, 2023, both the State of Mexico and Coahuila held elections for governor, while the latter also voted to renew their State Legislature. These subnational elections set a precedent for the Mexican general elections in 2024, since the two main electoral forces formed after the 2018 presidential elections participated in the 2023 processes: the ruling party Morena and its allies (PT and Pvem), and the opposition coalition (PAN, PRI, and PRD).

Against this background, the electoral bodies implemented affirmative action measures to guarantee the right to vote and demonstrated their logistical capacity by ensuring the development of election day. Electoral results were no surprise: PRI retained the power in Coahuila, while Morena won in the State of Mexico. Thus, the majority party continues to exercise its influence in 23 of the 32 Mexican states.
