The thought of Francisco Suárez (1548-1617), essential when stud- ying the reception by the philosophical modernity of the scholastic tradition and whose influence would become very great, is still the subject of controversy and even incomprehension. Incoherent or mag- nificent? Modern or traditional? Scotist or Thomist? In this article, after presenting the main features of his system -and the critical points of view-, an original theory will be formulated explaining the reasons for its complexity in the cognitive and cultural horizon of his time.
