ASURZA VELIZ, Flavio Alexander; RAMOS TAIPE, Cayo Leónidas  e  LAVADO CASIMIRO, Waldo Sven. Assessment of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) products in hydrological modeling of the Huancane river basin, Peru. Scientia Agropecuaria [online]. 2018, vol.9, n.1, pp.53-62. ISSN 2077-9917.  http://dx.doi.org/10.17268/sci.agropecu.2018.01.06.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the gridded precipitation products of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM), in hydrological modeling in the Huancané river basin of the Peruvian Altiplano. When comparing the average daily rainfall of the 3B42RT, 3B42V7 and IMERG products with respect to the average daily rainfall of the basin (April 2014 - December 2015), IMERG best represents the precipitation patterns (R2: 0.38) but does not adequately quantify the intensity (BIAS: -32%). The 3B42V7 product captures the rain intensity very well in contrast to the 3B42RT, which presents high overestimates. An evaluation of these uncorrected products in the hydrological model GR4J, shows that, the 3B42V7 product is the best option for the estimation of the discharges in avenue periods. However, when correcting the bias to the IMERG average, rainfall estimates improve (R2: 0.9; BIAS: -10.1%), therefore, corrected IMERG would be the best precipitation product. These preliminary results are limited to the analysis of a short period, however, as more IMERG data are released, more studies will be needed to explore their usefulness in hydrology and climate change.
