Abstract

INQUILLA MAMANI, Juan. Disability, poverty and social inequality in Puno: a multidimensional and multifactorial issue from a sociological perspective - Peru. Comuni@cción [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.1, pp.28-38. ISSN 2219-7168.

The relationship between disability and poverty are multiple and complex. Over several decades studies on people with disabilities have been shaping up towards an interpretation of the fact and not the relationship of both from the point of view of the explanatory variables. So, the objective of this article is to analyze the relationship between disability and poverty as an expression of social inequality, theoretical approaches and empirical evidence from a sociological perspective. To explain the relationship between disability and poverty in the region Puno, is the method used explanatory correlational. The found results allow to say that persons with disabilities are twice as likely to live below the threshold of poverty than people without disabilities. The difficulties encountered to access to education and the labour market are often vulnerable. And, in addition, stereotypes and myths that still survive in our country and in particular in the region Puno, causing social rejection. Therefore a vicious circle of poverty, generated i.e. disability is playing family poverty. The ultimate consequence of all this is that persons with disabilities are a social, cultural and economic discrimination as a result of the existence of intrinsic or structural barriers in the environment.

Keywords : Disability; poverty; inequality, and labor conditions.
