ABSTRACT In Peru, the results of reading comprehension are not encouraging, being one of the reasons for this problem the lack of good use of strategies when students read. In this context, this quasi-experimental design research was developed, whose purpose was to know the influence of the semantic map, semantic network and mental map in the reading comprehension of expository and argumentative texts, according to the reading levels: literal, inferential and critical. The instrument consisted of two reading booklets, pretest (without use of graphic organizers) and post-test (with the use of graphic organizers), applied to a sample of 36 students of the 1st cycle of a Higher Pedagogical Institute of the city of Lima, divided into experimental and control group. The results of the pretest were unsatisfactory for both groups, with predominance of the literal level, while, in the posttest, the students of the experimental group obtained favorable results, highlighting the inferential level with use of the semantic network, in the literal level with the semantic map, and at the critical level they used the mental map. Indeed, the graphic organizers do contribute to the reading comprehension of the students of the Institute
