MONTALVO PASTO, Laritza  and  LEVANO CASTRO, José Antonio. Incidence of tuberculosis in pregnant women at Hospital Nacional. Rev Per Ginecol obstet. [online]. 2013, vol.59, n.2, pp.101-106. ISSN 2304-5132.

Objectives: To determine incidence of tuberculosis (TBC) in mothers and perinatal adverse outcomes at our hospital from 2001 to 2009. Design: Descriptive observational transversal retrospective type study. Setting: Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia. Participants: Pregnant women with diagnosis of tuberculosis. Interventions: All pregnant women with diagnosis of tuberculosis were included. Main outcome measures: Pregnant women characteristics and perinatal results. Results: TBC frequency at our hospital was 5.1 cases per each 10 000 deliveries. Average mother’s age was 25.3 years; in 43.5% diagnosis was done during gestation, 43.5% out of gestation and 3 (13%) post partum. Delivery was vaginal in 65.2% and abdominal in 30.4%. No cases of endometritis occurred; 17.4% had sepsis and there was one maternal death due to severe preeclampsia. There were five cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TBC). Of all newborns 69.6% had adequate weight for gestational age and 30.4% were small for gestational age; 17.4% were premature and 21.7% had low weight. Only one newborn presented neonatal sepsis and none TBC. Conclusions: In our study tuberculosis affected pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium as well as perinatal outcome with more cases of low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation and low weight for gestational age.

Keywords : Tuberculosis; pregnancy; puerperium; newborn.
