Abstract

VERA LOYOLA, Edy. Patient-centered care of childbirth. Rev. peru. ginecol. obstet. [online]. 2019, vol.65, n.1, pp.51-56. ISSN 2304-5132.  http://dx.doi.org/10.31403/rpgo.v65i2152.

Patient-centered care of childbirth opens a new perspective to improve the quality of patient care. There have been many efforts to achieve this goal over the last couple of decades. Since the publication of the book "To err is human", there have been multiple endeavors to avoid adverse events in the patient. In this sense, the challenge is how to achieve this goal, given that delivery care is one of the processes with the most adverse events reported. Based on recommendations of WHO, we consider an approach consisting of: a) Health systems: safety culture, a milestone in this process, requires changes in the organization and is a critical issue to be solved; (b) Health professionals: not only involves physicians but also the health organization system from a medical perspective; people must not only have medical training but should also be specialized and constantly updating; challenges are different if it is a trainee or a medical specialist. There are ways to achieve this. In addition, to dispel the myths of obstetric care through evidence, we will need; (c) Family and community: the emotional component that provides the family is always a key column. Synergizing these guidelines can focus better person-centered care of childbirth.
