Abstract

LOPEZ, Elvia. 100 years after the death of Pancho Villa: literary and linguistic characterization of the character in the epic-revolutionary corridos. Leng. Soc. [online]. 2023, vol.22, n.2, pp.225-240.  Epub Sep 27, 2023. ISSN 1729-9721.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15381/lengsoc.v22i2.24341.

On the occasion of the centenary of the death of the Mexican caudillo Pancho Villa, this article proposes the analysis of 10 Mexican corridos from the period known as the Mexican Revolution. It is based on identifying the configuration of Pancho Villa’s character as a hero in the corrido, in order to study the construction of the idealized character; which frames the corrido within the epic genre. The contribution of this article is, in the first place, to offer a panorama of the linguistic and literary richness of the popular tradition, which is visible in the literary resources used in the epic-revolutionary corrido. This derives in a historical and cultural value, since the corrido condenses the legacy of the character mythologized as a revolutionary model, outlined in songs that until today are emblematic for Mexico.

Keywords : corrido; epic; revolution; Pancho Villa; Mexico.
