Abstract

MENDES MAGELA, Maíra. Polysemy in the framework of cognitive linguistic. Leng. Soc. [online]. 2023, vol.22, n.2, pp.643-660.  Epub Sep 27, 2023. ISSN 1729-9721.  http://dx.doi.org/10.15381/lengsoc.v22i2.25993.

The phenomenon of polysemy is a constant concern of cognitive studies, since this science understands that word meanings are typically polysemic and can be represented by conceptual categories that are structured from a central prototype. Therefore, cognitive linguistics explains the polysemy of words on the basis of the cognitive mechanisms that motivate it. In this paper, we present the ways in which polysemy is embedded in the paradigm of cognitive linguistics and the advances that this linguistic current has presented to show that polysemy is a natural condition of language that is anchored in bodily and social experience. In this paper, we reaffirm our proposal to investigate polysemy as a cognitive phenomenon underlying language processing.

Keywords : cognitive linguistics; language; polysemy; metaphors; meaning.
