GUERRERO PADILLA, Ana Marlene. Water availability and yield prediction of Zea mays L. (Poaceae) "corn" and Asparagus officinalis L. (Asparagaceae) "asparagus" in Jequetepeque Valley, Peru. Arnaldoa [online]. 2017, vol.24, n.1, pp.383-394. ISSN 1815-8242. http://dx.doi.org/10.22497/arnaldoa.241.24120.
The main objective of this research was to evaluate water availability and determine yield prediction of Zea mays L. (Poaceae) "corn" and Asparagus officinalis L. (Asparagaceae) "asparagus" through CROPWAT simulation model in Jequetepeque Valley, Peru. We applied the methodology of Penman-Monteith recommended by the FAO through the application of CROPWAT software for determining the water requirement of Z. mays and A. officinalis. The cultivation of Z. mays "corn" demanded a greater amount of water because it has a critical phase in pre- and post-flowering, due to cultivation evaporation (ETa) and cultivation evapotranspiration (ETc) with an irrigation requirement from January to March. A. officinalis "asparagus" showed irrigation requirement for low retention of water in the soil (ETa) and water loss by evapotranspiration (ETc) from the second week of October to January. Water availability and developed agricultural area had a Pearson’s R coefficient of 0.7957 and a P value of 0.002, indicating a highly significant statistical relation.
