Abstract

Deprea sapalachense (Solanaceae), a new species from northern Peru, is described and illustrated in detail. Deprea sapalachense S. Leiva & Barboza is found in Chorro Blanco, Sapalache-El Carmen de la Frontera road km 6, 5º07’29.9" S 79º22’53.0" W, 2740 m of elevation. It can be recognized because it has 2 (-3) flowers per node, corolla tube developed and glabrous internally, staminal filaments homodynamous, berry conical, orange when mature, 10-11 mm long and 11-12 mm of diameter, fructiferous calyx appressed wrapping tightly the berry in all its lenght, (31-) 50-67 seeds per berry, 20-22 sclerosomes per berry, shrubs 1-1.40 m tall. We include data of its relation with other similar species, geographic distribution, ecology, phenology, current status, common name and uses of the species
