We review the taxonomic position of the Cyanobacteria "spirulina" corresponding to a spirally septate form and is used in the human diet, belong the correct name Arthrospira jenneri Stizenberger ex Gomont (Oscillatoriaceae). The description of the species, the laboratory and industrial culture medium and its importance in nutrition and health are also summarized.
