MONTOYA T, Haydee et al. Aeroterrestrial communities of the microalga Klebsormidium (Klebsormidiophyceae, Streptophyta) in biological soil crusts of Peruvian coastal desert. Arnaldoa [online]. 2019, vol.26, n.3, pp.1105-1124. ISSN 1815-8242. http://dx.doi.org/10.22497/arnaldoa.263.26317.
The dryland ecosystems in the world comprise about 40% of the earth terrestrial surface where the biological soil crusts (BSCs) are a major colonizers. Collections of the soil crusts were carried out at the coastal lomas of Pachacamac and Iguanil at the central Peruvian coastal desert in South America. Aeroterrestrial communities were typified as epilitics and edaphics with their morphospecies characterization of the streptophyte Klebsormidium. The species K. fluitans, K. flaccidum and K. crenulatum are first reports for the Peruvian microalgal flora and increase their distribution and similitud to other biogeographic regions of our biosphere. They showed phenotypic plasticity with transitional morphotypes and reproductive strategies (aplanospores, fragmentation) for dispersion and propagation as desiccation stress responses.
