Resumen

PULIDO CAPURRO, Víctor; MALAGA ARENAS, Ernesto; OLIVERA CARHUAZ, Edith  y  ACEVEDO FLORES, Jessica. The conservation of habitats and birds in the National Sanctuary of Mejía Lagoons, Arequipa, Peru. Arnaldoa [online]. 2021, vol.28, n.1, pp.183-198. ISSN 1815-8242.  http://dx.doi.org/10.22497/arnaldoa.281.28111.

The National Sanctuary of Mejía Lagoons is located at the height of the mouth of the Tambo river, between the districts of Mejía and Dean Valdivia in the province of Islay in the department of Arequipa, over an area of 690.6 ha. The defined habitats are: lake water mirror, gramadal-juncal, mataral, sandy area, estuary of the Tambo river and riparian forest. This study shows that the loss of habitats is associated with the advance of the agricultural frontier, inadequate management of water resources and anthropogenic pressures. The conservation of the habitats at Mejía Lagoons constitutes an important aspect to guarantee the survival of the biological diversity that inhabits there, especially the 212 species of resident and migratory birds.

Palabras clave : Mejía lagoons; wetlands; migratory birds; biological diversity; habitats.
