Abstract

AGUIRRE MENDOZA, Zhofre  and  CABRERA GUERRERO, Orlando. Population parameters and natural regeneration of Bursera graveolens (Kunth) Triana & Planch (Burseraceae), in Zapotillo, Ecuador. Arnaldoa [online]. 2021, vol.28, n.2, pp.305-318. ISSN 1815-8242.  http://dx.doi.org/10.22497/arnaldoa.282.28203.

Population dynamics studies the composition and size of the population of a species through density, age, sex, spatial distribution, biological and environmental processes that drive them and their variations over time. The objective of the research was to evaluate the population parameters and the natural regeneration of Bursera graveolens (Burseraceae) in Malvas, Zapotillo canton, Ecuador. 18 temporary plots of 20 m x 20 m were installed, systematically with a spacing of 250 m. 2 m x 2 m plots were nested to study seedlings and sapling; subplots of 5 m x 5 m for low bed and 10 m x 10 m for high bed. The spatial distribution was calculated using the Standardized Morisita Index (Ip) and Near Neighbor Analysis (Qgis), the population density was determined by applying the absolute density formula, for the age structure the individuals were grouped into diameter classes, for natural regeneration structural parameters were calculated: relative density, frequency and IVI. The spatial distribution pattern according to the Standardized Morisita index is uniform (- 0.087), the density is 119 individuals / ha, most individuals are grouped between 22.60 cm and 25.74 cm DBH. Natural regeneration is scarce, the category with the highest number of individuals is sapling with 114 individuals / ha and has the highest IVI. The population is mostly adult; it was evidenced that regeneration is scarce, due to overgrazing of goats and collection of fruits to obtain essential oils

Keywords : population parameters; spatial distribution; population density; age structure; natural regeneration; Bursera graveolens.
