Resumen

PATINO HERMOZA, Omar; ROBLES CASTILLO, Heber  y  LEON MENDOZA, Luis. Biodegradation of petroleum by Bacillus thuringiensis as alternative for recuperation of agriculture soils. Arnaldoa [online]. 2021, vol.28, n.2, pp.339-348. ISSN 1815-8242.  http://dx.doi.org/10.22497/arnaldoa.282.28205.

The contamination great diversity of ecosystems, such as forests, mangroves, agricultural soils and water. Various studies have been done about different microorganisms to remediate petroleum- contaminated soils. In this research, there has been determined the biodegradation of petroleum by Bacillus thuringiensis, in three concentrations of 1.5, 3 and 4.5%. The biodegradation was measured using DBO5 and cell biomass. The DBO5 decreased, with an initial average of 66.85 mg O2/L (Day 0, start of treatment) until of 5.86 mg O2/L (Day 15, start of treatment). Cellular biomass increased exponentially with an average of 24x106 CFU/mL. Through the analysis of variance, no significant statistical difference was found between the treatments, but there is a correlative relationship between the concentration of petroleum and cell biomass, therefore, Bacillus thuringiensis may be an alternative for the recovery of agricultural soils contaminated with petroleum, however, its synergy with other microorganisms, its maximum tolerance to crude petroleum and appropriate methodologies for its application should be investigated.
