Abstract

LEIVA CHIMBOR, Luis Andres et al. Sundance trap activation and pollen production in Apis mellifera L. Arnaldoa [online]. 2021, vol.28, n.3, pp.625-632.  Epub Dec 31, 2021. ISSN 1815-8242.  http://dx.doi.org/10.22497/arnaldoa.283.28309.

Pollen constitutes a very important protein element in the human diet, but it is also important in hives, where it constitutes the only protein source for bees, hence the importance of evaluating and promoting new protocols for improving production. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the effect of activation-deactivation times on pollen production in Apis mellifera L. hives using Sundance traps. Four treatments consisting of different activation-deactivation times (30, 21, 14 and 7 days per month) in 20 hives with homogeneous bee populations were evaluated. Pollen collection was carried out every three days for four months. An average pollen production of 7,186 kg, 8,764 kg, 5,112 kg and 4,240 kg was recorded for every five hives for the 30, 21, 14 and 7 day treatments respectively. The analysis of variance and comparison of means determined the presence of highly significant differences, concluding that the time of activation-deactivation of the Sundance traps that allowed a greater production of pollen was every 21 days.
