Valeriana pilosa Ruiz & Pav. (Caprifoliaceae) is an American species, with a long history of medicinal use and putative pharmacological properties. It is probably one of the most common plants used in traditional medicine as a sedative or sleeping pill, which has led to increased scientific research. It is common that as scientific knowledge about the species increases, it is indirectly leading to an excessive demand for the resource, added to traditional use. The conservation of this species has not been considered in the plans, despite the evident anthropic action that it supports, reflected in the indiscriminate and unsustainable predation. In the high Andean areas of northern Peru, the extraction from its natural habitat is not controlled or regulated, evidenced in its depleted populations whose individuals are slow growing. Other risk factors include the burning of vegetation, the expansion of the agricultural usage, overgrazing and mining. In the present study, it is considered that the conservation of this plant must be comprehensive and involve different levels of decision making, including dissemination of aspects of its taxonomy, herbarium exsiccata, ethnobotany, phenology, distribution and ecology. Also, we analyze the current state of conservation and propose guidelines and strategies for its conservation in the northern Peru with emphasis on the jalca where it commonly lives.
