Abstract

SILUPU-MASIAS, José et al. Taxonomic identification of the thrips that cause "Red rust" in banana (Musa spp.) cultivation in the Chira Valley. Manglar [online]. 2023, vol.20, n.4, pp.363-369.  Epub Dec 17, 2023. ISSN 1816-7667.  http://dx.doi.org/10.57188/manglar.2023.042.

In Peru, the largest organic banana producing area is the Chira Valley. However, the high incidence of the damage known as "Red Rust" in bananas causes economic losses to small producers. This study aimed to taxonomically identify the species that causes this damage. Collections were made in organic banana farms in Huangalá, Querecotillo and Salitral. Adult specimens were identified taking into account the morphological characters. According to the proposed keys, we conclude that it is the species Chaetanaphothrips signipennis (Bagnall) and that it is the only species responsible for the damage known as "Red Rust " in bananas and not for a complex as reported in the local literature. Knowing this result is essential for proper crop management, mainly for pest control strategies.

Keywords : Organic banana; "Red Rust"; morphological characters; Chaetanaphothrips signipennis.
