ACUNA SILLO, Elba Lourdes. Entrepreneurship and resilience: the case of small grocery stores in Peru during the Covid-19 pandemic. Desde el Sur [online]. 2021, vol.13, n.1, e0007. ISSN 2076-2674.  http://dx.doi.org/10.21142/des-1301-2021-0012.

Small neighborhood grocery stores in Peru represent one of the most important sales channels for Peruvian households and account for more than 70% of all retail sales. Within the context of a socioeconomic pyramid in which the middle, low and very low sectors of the population, with their limited purchasing capacity, predominate, small grocery stores are firmly rooted in Peru's neighborhood communities. In addition to performing an essential role in the supply of basic necessities, they also fulfill a social and anthropological role in the life of Peruvian neighborhoods. The Covid-19 pandemic negatively impacted the main sources of income for small grocery stores, which were forced to adapt to this new context by adopting digital technologies, such as social networks and mobile applications, in order to address an unprecedented crisis. This essay discusses the relationship between entrepreneurship and resilience among Peru's small grocery stores. While the Covid-19 pandemic has produced substantial improvements in the management of these businesses, there remain many opportunities for the digitization of this nationally important sales channel.
