Abstract

The earthquake that happened in Ancash on May 31st, 1970 was considered the most devastating phenomenon in the last 300 years in Peru and the most affected city was Huaraz. Based on the bibliographic investigation, the documentary analysis and interviews to survivors the article analyzes the Andean countries tradition of earthquakes, fractures since colonial times and makes a review of the performance after the event until the present day. Besides, the research verifies that the actions of the local and national governments were not the most appropriate and added to the recent population increase contributed to the particular urban growth in Huaraz, a diverse and cosmopolitan city in the present.
