Abstract

RAMOS-ZAGA, Fernando Antonio. The potential of nudge as a tool for policy making. Desde el Sur [online]. 2023, vol.15, n.2, e0031.  Epub Apr 25, 2023. ISSN 2076-2674.  http://dx.doi.org/10.21142/e0031.

From the perspective of behavioral economics, nudge, as a psychological mechanism, is a potential tool in public policy making, as it has been widely recognized for its success in recent interventions due to its low implementation cost. In this sense, this article analyzed the potential use of nudge in public policies in certain situations. To this end, a systematic literature review on behavioral economics was carried out. The results allowed us to identify the potential use of nudge in public policy with respect to predetermined decisions, protection against unsolicited purchases and automatic renewal contracts. In conclusion, the use of nudge in public policy making would allow governments that apply it to ensure the effectiveness of their interventions and improve the level of citizen approval.

Keywords : Behavioral economics; nudge; incentives; libertarian paternalism; public policy.
