Abstract
SUN, Jiang. Western religion (yangjiao) as otherness: Christianity and Chinese society in the 19th century. Discursos del sur [online]. 2022, n.10, pp.141-167. Epub Dec 31, 2022. ISSN 2617-2283. http://dx.doi.org/10.15381/dds.n10.24408.
In China, relations between Christianity and society were marked by anti-Christian disputes. In the second half of the 19th century, the antagonism with the Christians was reflected in the clash between traditional Chinese beliefs and Christian beliefs, and between the popular secret sects and the Church. In addition, there were also discrepancies in everyday matters, such as ancestor worship and funeral rites. However, these rivalries were not absolute. In a local context, once the discord between religiosity and daily conflicts had been resolved, Christianity (called yangjiao in China) was adopted as one more member of the great family of Chinese syncretistic religions.
