Abstract

RODRIGUEZ MANSILLA, Fernando. «Perú, madrastra de tus hijos» (Historia general del Perú, I, XXXVIII): a Philological Note and the Fortune of a Phrase in Peruvian Culture. Bol. Acad. peru. leng. [online]. 2021, n.69, pp.11-36. ISSN 0567-6002.  http://dx.doi.org/10.46744/bapl.202101.001.

This paper sets out to explain the meaning of a phrase by Inca Garcilaso («Perú, madrastra de tus hijos y madre de los ajenos») [Peru, stepmother of your children and mother of others’ children] included in the Historia general del Perú (book I, ch. 38th). This phrase has been neglected and often misread, due to ignorance of the literary and linguistic conventions of the Golden Age. After establishing the meaning and function of the phrase in Garcilaso’s text, the paper explores its meaning as used in contemporary Peruvian sociopolitical drivers.

Keywords : Inca Garcilaso; stepmother; Historia General del Perú; indigenism; Inca Garcilaso studies.
