Abstract

MANALLAY MORENO, Pedro Luis. Embodiment in Quechua toponymy. Bol. Acad. peru. leng. [online]. 2022, n.71, pp.137-163.  Epub June 23, 2022. ISSN 0567-6002.  http://dx.doi.org/10.46744/bapl.202201.005.

This paper analyzes the thesis of embodiment through toponymic data from the Quechua dialects of Llata (Huánuco) and Huaccana (Apurímac). We will show that the Quechua toponymic system supports this thesis, since experiences are important to generate conceptualizations about geographical points. Likewise, we will argue that, in corporealized toponymic production, the process of ontological salience (Schmid, 2007) is necessary to elaborate the names of places. In sum, based on the corporeal thesis, we will establish a line between the cultural semantic mechanisms and the universal semantic mechanisms found in Quechua toponyms.

Keywords : embodiment; toponymy; experience; conceptualization.
