Abstract

ROCHA MARTINEZ, Rolando. Cognitive approach to Shipibo polysemy. Bol. Acad. peru. leng. [online]. 2022, n.71, pp.197-235.  Epub June 23, 2022. ISSN 0567-6002.  http://dx.doi.org/10.46744/bapl.202201.007.

The aim of this study is to identify the mechanisms that determine the explicitness of polysemous utterances in Shipibo, a Peruvian language of Pano linguistic filiation. As in many other languages, this language shows cases of polysemy that are motivated by the experience of individuals and their interaction with the world they categorize and organize. Whether at the nominal or verbal level, polysemy in Shipibo consists of the mental structuring of senses or meanings, which generates a productive mechanism that makes possible its permanent reorganization through the incorporation of new meanings; such is the case of bero ‘eye’, which can also mean ‘seed’ and ‘species of sardine’. In this sense, the monosemic idea of a single meaning with multiple options in use is abandoned and a network of prototypical relations is proposed that presents a structured internal organization.

Keywords : Shipibo; polysemy; cognitive linguistics; radial network; prototypicality.
