Peru has a context in which the role of indigenous languages is being rethought, both at home and abroad. Since Peru is home to the largest number of Quechua speaking people in the region, it is not new that Peruvian languages play a role in Peruvian foreign policy and, more specifically, in cultural diplomacy. However, it is necessary to detail what that role is and through which concrete examples the inclusion of indigenous languages can be evidenced. This text proposes to present a mainly -but not exclusively- qualitative analysis of the inclusion of indigenous languages in Peruvian foreign policy, as well as the relevant challenges and opportunities. The results of this research confirm that the inclusion of indigenous languages in foreign policy is a determining factor in forging cultural diplomacy and Peruvian international identity, and in strengthening (bilateral and multilateral) cultural cooperation with countries that have similar linguistic characteristics, challenges, and opportunities.
