Abstract

VALQUI, Jairo  and  OISEL, Guillaume. Grammaticalization of the pronoun usted into a clitic -ste in Peruvian Spanish in the Southern Part of the Amazonas Department. Bol. Acad. peru. leng. [online]. 2022, n.72, pp.165-186.  Epub Dec 16, 2022. ISSN 0567-6002.  http://dx.doi.org/10.46744/bapl.202202.005.

The aim of this paper is to give an account of the process of grammaticalization of the tonic personal pronoun usted used as the clitic -ste in the Spanish spoken in the Southern Part of the Amazonas Department (Peru). Based on the semantic, morphosyntactic and phonological analysis, this grammaticalization process has given rise to a clitic that provides the sense of ‘distanciation or correctness’ between the interlocutors of a discursive event. The main conclusions report that the clitic -ste, a product of the grammaticalization of the pronoun usted, characterizes a variety of North Peruvian Andean Spanish, also attested in the Andean provinces of La Libertad, some provinces of Cajamarca and Ancash, and in Lower Piura (Andrade, 2016, 2018, 2019).

Keywords : Peruvian Spanish; Andean-Coastal Spanish; grammaticalization; pronoun usted; clitic; suffix.
