Resumen

CASTRO-CANO, Eleine Martha. Attenuation and intensification in scientific papers. Bol. Acad. peru. leng. [online]. 2023, n.73, pp.151-177.  Epub 30-Jun-2023. ISSN 0567-6002.  http://dx.doi.org/10.46744/bapl.202301.006.

Attenuation and intensification have a communicative purpose and generate an effect on the reader: the former functions as a shield and the latter is presented as a credible fact (Córdova and Barragán, 2022). The aim of this research was to describe attenuation and intensification in the discussion section of the scientific paper. The research was non-experimental, descriptive and cross-sectional, with a non-probabilistic and convenience sample, corresponding to five discussions of papers published in the journal Signos. The results indicate that the authors of the papers prefer intensification, they are very direct when discussing their results; consequently, the figure of the “I” is imposed. On the other hand, they do not neglect attenuation, because they perceive that what they are about to affirm may generate a reaction or disagreement in the reader; therefore, the effect of what they affirm is diminished. It is concluded that 40 cases found correspond to intensification and 34 to attenuation, which indicates that the authors are very direct when presenting their results in the discussion section; they seek to be precise, clear, objective and neutral with their statements.

Palabras clave : attenuation; intensification; academic genre; scientific article; discussion section.
