TICONA S., Daniel et al. Prevalence of Fasciola hepatica in cattle and sheep of Vilcashuaman, Ayacucho. Rev. investig. vet. Perú [online]. 2010, vol.21, n.2, pp.168-174. ISSN 1609-9117.
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Fasciola hepatica in cattle and sheep in the district of Vilcashuaman, Ayacucho, using a coproparasitological test. For this study, 381 and 207 fecal samples were taken from cattle and sheep, respectively, during the dry season (July and August 2004) and were analyzed by the spontaneous sedimentation technique. The prevalence was 35.9 ± 4.8% and 39.1 ± 6.7%, and the corrected prevalence was 47.6 ± 5.0% and 52.1 ± 6.8% for cattle and sheep respectively. The species, sex, and age variables were not risk factors for distomatosis; however, the rate of infection showed a direct relationship with the altitude above the sea level (p<0.01), constituting a risk factor for the disease.
