PALACIOS Q., Crisanto D.. Enfermedad de Chagas en la provincia de Rodríguez de Mendoza (Dpto. de Amazonas). Rev. perú. med. exp. salud publica [online]. 1960, vol.13, n.1-2, pp.15-26. ISSN 1726-4634.
From 1949 we have got informations about the infestation of Omia city (province of Rodriguez de Mendoza, department of Amazonas) by some triatomid bug, which in 1950 was identified as Panstrongylus herreri, the main vector of american trypanosomiasis in the jungle of Peru. Some investigations carried out during 1956-1958 in connection with this insect and Ghagas'disease in Omia district, revealed that: 1. At least the city Omia and the villages of Shigua, Tuemal and Chorrillos are infested by P. herreri. This infestation seems to have been iniciated in 1949. 2. In Omia and Shigua have been captured specimens of P. herreri infected by Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas'disease. This strain of T. cruzi is of litle virulence and, in young white rats, produces a parasitemia of short duration and low intensity. 3. Xenodiagnosis was made in 82 persons of Omia and Shigua cities, five of which resulted positive. All these five cases belonged to children adn none of them showed the palpebral edema known as "signo de Romaña", a characteristic sign of the acute stage of Chagas'disease.
