Abstract

CANTUARIAS AYO, Pámela  and  PONTE TORREL, Juan Manuel. An approach to subnational politics based on the regional runoff 2022 in Peru. Elecciones [online]. 2023, vol.22, n.25, pp.331-352.  Epub June 30, 2023. ISSN 1994-5272.  http://dx.doi.org/10.53557/elecciones.2023.v22n25.11.

On December 4, 2022, Peru held runoff elections (SER 2022, in Spanish) in nine regions, as part of the regional and municipal elections that took place earlier that same year. A unique feature of the SER 2022 is that it focuses solely on electing governors and vice governors in the regions where no political organization received more than 30 % of valid votes in the previous election. This article provides a descriptive analysis of the context for the SER 2022, and highlights the differences with previous electoral processes. Additionally, the article presents an assessment of subnational politics in Peru considering the recent electoral process.

Keywords : Peru; regional elections; political campaigns; electoral results.
