Women in politics have made important progress in descriptive representation. Nevertheless, there are still multiple obstacles that limit women’s involvement in decision-making positions. In a context increasingly mediated by technology, gender violence in digital environments opens up new challenges towards an equitable democracy. These types of attacks decenter women from the political debate and reinforce gender stereotypes. Futhermore, they restrict their participation in social media to avoid violence. In time, these attacks limit the relationship of these women with their constituents and hinder their freedom of speech.

In collaboration with the National Directorate for Equality of the National Chamber of Deputies and the National Democratic Institute we, as Cippec, designed a survey to collect the perceptions on this phenomenon among national, provincial, and local representatives. The results suggest a general agreement on the relevance of the problem and on its impact on women’s careers. However, we find that the levels of agreement decline when asking how to approach messages that include attacks and other violent forms against women. Finally, we identify different perceptions for the different levels of government.
