Abstract

DE ICAZA, Gerardo  and  GARZON SHERDEK, Karen. Artificial intelligence in electoral processes: What to expect from ChatGPT?. Elecciones [online]. 2023, vol.22, n.26, pp.231-260.  Epub Dec 14, 2023. ISSN 1994-5272.  http://dx.doi.org/10.53557/elecciones.2023.v22n26.07.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has generated intense public debate, with some considering it a threat to democracy (Hofstetter 2016; O’neil 2017), while others highlight its possible benefits (Helbing 2019; Ennals 1987). The impact of these new technologies on electoral processes raises countless questions, which motivated us to learn about the answers a chatbot provided to users. Through a descriptive-qualitative methodology, this research aims to analyze the responses from ChatGPT to reflect on its use in electoral processes and in the overall democratic system in the region. To this end, the article proposes to address three central elements: (i) a descriptive approach to AI in electoral processes, the formulation and systematization of different questions addressed to the ChatGPT platform, and a reflection on its potentials and limitations.

The results highlight that, although AI constitutes an innovative technological tool, its limitations and the risks associated with its reliability must be taken into account. Therefore, we shed light on the need for a regional debate on regulations regarding its development and application. This article provides a solid and innovative theoretical foundation for future research and debates on the use of AI in the democratic sphere.
