WARD, Thomas. Manuel González Prada, modernista poet?. Bol. Acad. peru. leng. [online]. 2022, n.72, pp.63-105.  Epub 16-Dez-2022. ISSN 0567-6002.  http://dx.doi.org/10.46744/bapl.202202.002.

This article addresses a deficit in the modernista literary canon formed by international literary criticism which occurs because this catalog resists including the poet Manuel González Prada despite his coevalness with the movement and despite the literary attributes they share. This article begins by reviewing the details of the exclusion of González Prada from international criticism and then turns to begin to address this deficiency. Two aspects that suggest the poet’s modernismo will be considered: 1) by means of research in the periodical archive, multinational modernismo’s reception in the review edited by Clorinda Matto de Turner, El Perú Ilustrado, during the period González Prada was publishing there, will be detailed; and 2) by comparing first editions of poetry books (where possible), a consonance of certain modernista elements in the poetry of González Prada and Rubén Darío will be established. The research presented underscores a need to incorporate González Prada’s poetry into the modernista canon maintained by international literary criticism.

Palavras-chave : Peruvian literature; Manuel González Prada; Rubén Darío; Clorinda Matto de Turner; El Perú Ilustrado; modernismo.
